Electricity consumption in Italy: -0.7% in September

Rome, 21 October 2016 - In September, according to data collected by Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, electricity demand in Italy was 26.3 billion kWh, with a 0.7% decrease compared to the same month last year.

The seasonally adjusted short-term profile for energy demand in September 2016, which tracks seasonal cycles and consequent impacts on production cycles, showed an increase of 1% compared to the previous month. This represents a stable trend.

The 26.3 billion kWh required in September 2016 were distributed across the country as follows: 47.1% in the North, 30% in Central Italy and 22.9% in the South. At the regional level, in September 2016 there was an increase in the North (+2%), and a decrease in Central Italy (-2.5%) and in the South (-5.3%).

In terms of peak output, a high of 48,757 MW was reached at 12 noon on 02 September 2016, with a 3.4% decrease on the highest figure for September 2015.

In September 2016, demand for electricity was met predominately by national production (89%), with the remainder (11%) from the balance of electricity exchanged with other countries. In detail, net national production (23.6 billion kWh) grew by 1.4% compared to September 2015. Thermal production grew (+7.7%), whilst photovoltaic (-2%), geothermal (-2.5%), hydroelectric (-13.2%) and wind power (-29.1%) all declined.

Demand in the first nine months of 2016 decreased by 3.1% compared to the corresponding period of 2015. Based on the same number of days, the result was -3.4%.
