In the first quarter of 2017, electricity demand increased by 0.6% compared to the same period in 2016 (+0.9% based on the same number of days).

Rome, 14 April 2017 - In March 2017, according to data collected by Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, electricity demand in Italy was 26.2 billion kWh, basically in line with the same month last year (-0.1%). Demand for electricity in the first quarter of 2017 increased by 0.6% compared to the corresponding period of 2016. Based on the same number of days, there was a 0.9% increase.


At the regional level, in March 2017 there was an increase in the North (+0.8%), and a decrease in Central Italy (-0.5%) and in the South (-2%).

The short-term seasonally adjusted value for March 2017 showed a decrease in electricity demand compared to the previous month (-1.3%). There is a slight downward trend.

In March 2017, the electricity demand was met 81.9% by national production and for the remaining part (18.1%) by the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. More specifically, net national production (21.6 billion kWh) dropped by 1.9% compared to March 2016. Solar production increased (+27.9%), as did wind production (+15.2%) while hydroelectric (-16.5%), thermal (-4.5%) and geothermal (-0.8%) production dropped.
