EARLY DATA ON ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN 2014: -2.1% CONSIDERING AN UNCHANGED TEMPERATURE AND THE SAME NUMBER OF DAYS

Renewable energy sector still up: almost 40% of production is green

Roma, January 14, 2015 - According to Terna's early provisional data, the electricity demand in

2014 decreased by 2.1% over 2013, considering an unchanged temperature and the same number of days. Without considering the effect of the number of days (two working days less) and of the temperature (warmer winter and cooler summer), the 309.0 billion kWh demand of 2014 corresponds to a decrease of -3.0%
At the territorial level, the most significant drops were registered in Lombardy (-6.4%), in the North- West macro-area (-4.4%), which includes Liguria, Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta, and in Sicily (-
3.4%).
In 2014, the electricity demand was met for 85.9% with the national production and for the remaining part (14.1%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (267.6 billion kWh) dropped by 4.0% compared to 2013. There were increases in photovoltaic (+9.8%), hydroelectric (+7.4%), geothermal (+4.2%), and wind power production (+1.0%); thermoelectric production dropped (-9.7%). Overall, hydroelectric, photovoltaic, wind power and geothermal production reached 102 billion kWh (compared to 95 billion kWh in 2013) equal to 38% of the net national production.
Regarding the month of December 2014, the electricity demand declined by 2.9%, at the same temperature levels, compared to December 2013. Without considering the effects of the temperature - about half a degree centigrade higher compared to December 2013 - and considering the same number of working days (20), the 25.6 billion kWh demand represented a fall of 3.4%. The 25.6 billion kWh required for the month of December 2014 were distributed 44.65% in the North, 30.4% in the Center, and 25.0% in the South. At the territorial level, the electricity demand in December 2014 was negative throughout the country: -3.5% in the North, -2.8% in Central Italy and -3.6% in the South. In December 2014, the electricity demand was met for 85.0% with the national production and for the remaining part (15.0%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. More in details, the net national production (22.0 billion kWh) dropped by 5.2% compared to December 2013. In particular, hydroelectric (+5.8%), geothermal (+9.4%) and wind power (+37.0%) energy production increased. Thermoelectric (-10.8%) and photovoltaic production (-2.2%) both declined. The short-term profile for December 2014 showed a seasonally adjusted variation in electricity demand compared to the previous month (November
2014) down by 0.9%. The trend profile is once again decreasing.
The detailed analysis of provisional 2014 and 2013 monthly electricity demand is available in the publication "Rapporto Mensile sul Sistema Elettrico", (Italian version only) under the section "Sistema elettrico >> Dispacciamento >>Dati esercizio" at www.terna.it.
