CS_Consumi_Luglio 2015_EN ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION IN ITALY: +13.4% IN JULY

The 32 billion kWh consumed represent the highest monthly demand ever in Italy

In the first seven months of the year demand grew by 1.6% compared to 2014

Rome, August 6, 2015 - In July 2015, electricity demand in Italy was 32.0 billion kWh, up 13.4%

compared to the same month last year. As detected by Terna - the national electricity grid operator
- electricity demand figures for July are the most relevant ever recorded for the Italian electricity system, both in absolute terms and in terms of percentage increase.
The high growth in electricity demand is due to the exceptional temperatures recorded; July 2015, with the same number working days (23), recorded an average monthly temperature 4 degrees higher compared to July 2014, which - it must be noted - it was particularly negative compared to
2013 (-5.1%).
July 2015 figures set the new absolute record of electricity consumption in Italy: at 4.00 pm of
Tuesday, July 21, Terna recorded a peak value of 59,353 MW.
The 32.0 billion kWh required in July 2015 were distributed for 45.7% in the North, 30.3% in Central Italy and 24.0% in the South. At the territorial level, the variation in electricity demand in July was +13.1% in the North, +14.1% in Central Italy, and +13.4% in the South.
In the first seven months of 2015, the variation in electricity demand rose by 1.6% compared to the volumes of the same period of 2014; based on the same number of days, this figure equals +1.4%.
In July 2015, the electricity demand was met for 87.0% with the national production and for the remaining part (13.0%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. More in detail, net national production (28.0 billion kWh) rose by 11.4% compared to the volumes of July last year. Thermal (+29.0%) and photovoltaic (+21.2%) energy production increased, while wind power (-42.2%), hydroelectric (-21.5%) and geothermal (-1.5%) production dropped.
The short-term profile for July 2015 showed a seasonally adjusted variation in electricity demand compared to the previous month equal to +10.6% with a trend that continues to be stable.
The detailed analysis of the provisional 2015 and final 2014 monthly electricity demand is available in the publication "Rapporto Mensile sul Sistema Elettrico", (Italian version only) under the section "Sistema elettrico >> Dispacciamento >>Dati esercizio" at www.terna.it
