Electricity consumption in Italy: - 3.7% in March

In March 2014, the electricity required in Italy, equal to 26.2 billion kWh, dropped by 3.7%, compared to March of last year.

Net of the effects of temperature, however, the change in electricity demand for March was -2.9%. Compared to same month last year the number of working days was the same (21), and the average monthly temperature was slightly over one degree centigrade higher.
The 26.2 billion kWh required for the month of March 2014 were distributed 46.9% in the North, 29.1% in the Center, and 24.0% in the South.

At the territorial level, the variation in electricity demand in March was negative throughout the country: -4.4% in the North, -3.4% in Central Italy and -2.6% in the South.

In March 2014, the electricity demand was met 82% by national production and the remainder (18%) by the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (21.8 billion kWh) fell by 8.5% compared to March 2013. Photovoltaic (+36.9%), hydroelectric (+19.7) and geothermal (+5.2%) energy production continued to increase. Thermoelectric production (-17.7%) and wind power (-24.8%) both declined.

The short-term profile for March 2014 showed a seasonally adjusted variation in electricity demand compared to the previous month equal to +0.1%. However, the trend profile is once again decreasing.

In the first three months of 2014, the electricity demand decreased by 3.7% compared to the first three months of 2013; based on the same number of days, this figure equals -3.5%.
