Terna: in 2014 the only independent grid operator in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index

  • The Company retains its position in the top sustainability ranking for the 6th year running

The only independent grid operator and sixth consecutive renewal for Terna in the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index and fifth double presence in the "World" and "Europe" baskets. This is the result from the annual review conducted by the Swiss rating agency RobecoSAM and published on-line from this morning, which also renewed the Company's inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe for the fifth time.

Terna's continued presence in both indices with a total score of 87, up 3 points over last year and one of the highest in the Electric Utilities sector (average score: 56), recognizes the Company's constant commitment to sustainable management and is an indicator of its value creation capability for investors, also in the medium-to-long term.

This is also confirmed by Terna's free float share, held by investors attentive to sustainability performance, which has tripled in the last three years, to reach 7.2% by the end of 2013. A significant recognition at an international level, considering that this year only 8 Electric Utilities have been included in the World index (9 in 2013) and only 3 in the Europe index (5 in 2013).

This year 319 companies (333 in 2013) have been selected out of 2,500 in the "World" index and 154 (177 in 2013) out of 600 in the "Europe" index. The analysis by RobecoSAM involves a detailed assessment of corporate systems for the governance of risks and opportunities related to the social and environmental impacts of companies.

The strictness of the assessment criteria resulted this year in the exclusion from the Dow Jones Sustainability World index of 46 companies that were previously included. The rise in Terna's score is mainly due to its improved performance in the environment area, in particular in the sections Climate Strategy and Operational Eco Efficiency.

Terna's social performance has also improved in the sections Health and Safety and Labor Practice Indicator.

The composition of the most prestigious international stock exchange sustainability index is reviewed once a year by RobecoSAM based on the results of the assessment, which evaluates the sustainability performance of enterprises with the highest level of capitalization. In addition to its presence in the DJSI, Terna is included in the international sustainability indexes FTSE4GOOD (Global and Europe), ECPI (Ethical Global, Euro and EMU), MSCI (ESG World, EAFE, EMU, Europe), ESI (Excellence Europe), Ethibel (Pioneer and Excellence), STOXX ESG (Global, Environmental, Social and Governance), Vigeo Euronext (World, Europe and Eurozone), and in the Italian indexes FTSE ECPI Italia SRI Benchmark and Italia SRI Leaders, which are compiled solely on the basis of companies listed in the Italian Stock Exchange.
