Renewable, storage system, energy efficiency and e-mobility: innovation and technology for redevelopment of the territory

• Agreement signed between the company Vento di Venezia and Terna Plus: project planning for environmental recovery through experimentation with new technologies and clean energy
• Integrated management of the grid, intelligent consumption, reduction of emissions: the plans for the island offer a host of benefits
• This project forms part of a wider Terna strategy to modernise the grid and take a more innovative, hi-tech approach on Italy's smaller islands: similar agreements are already in place on Giglio, Giannutri and Pantelleria

Electric vehicles and charging stations, ICT systems for public lighting and broadband connectivity, energy efficiency initiatives, solar systems, and mini wind and storage systems: thanks to experimentation with a series of innovative solutions, the result of the agreement signed between Vento di Venezia (the company who will carry out the redevelopment of the island of Certosa in partnership with the Venice municipal authority) and Terna Plus (the Terna Group company which develops and manages non-regulated activities) the island of Certosa will become a true laboratory for smart energy.

This three-year project forms part of a wider programme aimed at the social, environmental and economic recovery of the island of Certosa's 24 hectares. Thanks to the work of Terna Plus, the objectives of the urban regeneration project have been set high, so that this island, with its rich historical and natural heritage, can become a model smart energy island and an international leader in sustainability and cutting-edge technology. With the spread of clean energy and integration of such technology with the transmission grid, along with a more intelligent management of consumption, the island of Certosa - which is currently connected electrically to the mainland - will be focused on local energy management as well as a reduction in emissions by limiting use of traditional forms of energy production. This will bring clear benefits for the territory and for the businesses that will be developed on the island.

In order to contain the impacts of the environmental redevelopment, all the solutions identified will be carefully managed to marry the requirements of the electricity service with protection of the natural landscape. The size of structures will be kept to a minimum, limiting interference in areas of natural, historical or archaeological importance.

The project to make the island of Certosa an example in terms of renewable, smart, sustainable solutions with greater energy self-sufficiency and lower emissions, forms part of a wider Terna strategy for modernisation of the transmission grids on the smaller islands. This extends to other Italian territories: similar initiatives have already been launched on the islands of Giglio and Giannutri in Tuscany and Pantelleria in Sicily.
