Worldsteel released global and regional annual crude steel production figures. The global index shows an increase of 1.2% (1662 MM tons) in 2014, in comparison with the previous year.



Mexico appears as the second largest steel producer in Latin America, standing in the 13th place in the TOP-15 worldsteel ranking. Despite its size, Middle East marked the largest increase in regional terms: 7.7%.
On January 22nd in Brussels, worldsteel published its annual crude steel output index, that reached the 1662 MM tons worldwide. The regions with the highest growth in percentage terms were: Middle East (7.7%), North America (1.7%), Asia (1.4%) and Latin America (0.1%). On the other side, Australia and New Zealand decreased -1.8%, Africa, -0.7% and Europe, -0.1%.

Specifically, Latin America as a whole produced 65.5 million tons in 2014, of which 33.9 million tons belonged to Brazil and 5.5 MM tons to Argentina, showing a decrease of -0.7% and -5.8% respectively. Mexico achieved an annual increase of 4.2%, producing 19.2 million tons in 2014, which places the country in the TOP-15 worldsteel ranking.

On the other hand, North America recorded, in general terms, a rise of 1.7% and a 100.9 MM tons crude steel output. From the regional total figures, 88.3 million tons belong to the United States of America and 12.6 million tons to Canada. Asia boosted its production by 1.4% year-over-year, reaching a crude steel output of 1,132.3 MM tons. Particularly China grew 0.9% (annual total: 822.7 MM tons), Japan 0.1% (annual total: 110.7 MM tons) and South Korea increased its production by 7.5%, reaching 71 million tons of crude steel.

Middle East experienced the highest growth in regional terms. It went from producing 26.5 MM tons of crude steel in 2013 to 28.5 MM tons in 2014. This represents a rise of 7.7%.
Finally, Europe's outputs increased 1.7% year-over-year, reaching levels of annual production of 169.2 MM tons. The highest rise in the region was Germany with a 0.7% increase from 2013, and 42.9 million tons of crude steel production in the last year. The C.I.S. region (Russia, Uzbekistan and Ukraine, among others countries) production fell 2.8% in 2014, reaching only 105.3 million tons in 2014, of which 70.7 MM tons correspond to Russia and 27 2 MM tons to Ukraine.
