Brits are getting set for a gourmet day of luxury home dining for Valentine's Day this weekend.

With the most romantic day of the year falling on a Sunday many people are set to pamper their loved ones with special culinary treats throughout the day.

Based on previous Valentine's Day shopping habits Tesco predicts that that demand for oysters, a well-known aphrodisiac, will rocket by 500 per cent.

And it looks like sumptuous steak will be the main meal served on the day with sales expected to soar by 40 per cent.

Champagne is also likely to flow throughout the day with demand predicted to rise by 150 per cent compared with a normal weekend.

Meanwhile in a poll of 2000 people, conducted for Tesco, respondents revealed who their dream waiter or waitress on Sunday morning would be:

  • More than a quarter of women wished to be served breakfast in bed by George Clooney
  • Nearly a sixth of men are hoping for Nigella Lawson

And as far as their dream Valentine's Day breakfast goes 27 per cent of Brits chose the classic full English.

Tesco champagne buyer Rob Dixon said:'Judging by our poll many Brits can expect a lazy day with their loved ones pampering them with luxury foods.

'We'll be helping out all those budding Romeos and Juliets out there by ordering in extra oysters, as they are traditionally one of our top sellers in advance of Valentine's Day.

'Of course, oysters go perfectly with champagne and we predict demand will be up by around 150 per cent on a normal weekend.'

For Valentine's Day Tesco predicts the following uplift in food and related sales compared with a normal weekend:

  • Oysters - up by 500 per cent
  • Champagne - up by 150 per cent
  • Box of chocolates - up by more than 120 per cent
