A lower cost solution for treating difficult water is now available in Europe and China

  • TEQUATIC™ PLUS filter introduced in parallel with Aquatech Amsterdam in Europe and the International Desalination Conference in China
  • Product experiencing growth in new applications, including industrial wastewater treatment and reuse
  • Manufacturing gears up to accommodate demand

Dow Water & Process Solutions (DW&PS), a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW), introduced the TEQUATIC™ PLUS fine particle filter to the China and European market in October and November respectively, one year after its launch in North America. Since then, it has gained momentum in many applications for difficult, high-solids water, including industrial wastewater treatment and reuse, and is supported by a recently opened manufacturing facility in Menlo Park, Calif.

"Customers around the globe have a growing need to protect important water resources with a cost-effective, high-performance solution," said Cedella Beazley, business unit director, Filtration, DW&PS. "The TEQUATIC PLUS filter can help customers improve the efficiency of their operations while also reducing their environmental footprint through, for example, less waste, high water recovery and high uptime."

With its patented and award-winning design, the TEQUATIC PLUS filter combines the power of continuously cleaning, cross-flow filtration with centrifugal separation and solids collection into one device to meet the demands of extreme water environments. It is unique to the tough water space, reliably handling very high and highly variable total suspended solids up to 10,000 mg/L without frequent filter changes - even in the presence of oil. These and other features enable it to overcome the shortcomings of conventional technologies such as bag and cartridge filters.

Application Highlight

John Patrin, global marketing manager, Filtration, cited a recent success in the wastewater treatment and reuse market at a meat processing plant. "When integrated into an existing wastewater treatment system, the TEQUATIC PLUS filter removed 98% of the solids above 20 microns - using a 35-micron filter - in a feedwater stream containing total suspended solids levels of 2,000 mg/L above 20 micron," he said. "This was achieved with no fouling or backwash cycles, and with a 99 percent water recovery."

Consequently, the customer extended the time between bag filter changes from 10 minutes to 60 minutes, and improved the performance of the downstream ceramic filters. In addition, because the TEQUATIC PLUS filter removed such a high level of solids, the customer is able to increase the flow rate through the dissolved air flotation unit, minimizing the need to invest in capital for higher throughput rates.

"We are seeing results like these in a variety of other industrial wastewater treatment markets too, such as pulp and paper, textiles and laundry," Patrin said. "This is in addition to proven performance in applications such as produced water for oil and gas, and food and beverage."

The TEQUATIC PLUS filter is specifically targeted toward non-potable water applications, functioning as a primary filter, a pre-filter or a post-filter depending on the need.

Manufacturing & R&D

Clean Filtration Technologies LLC ("CFT"), a wholly owned subsidiary of Dow, markets the TEQUATIC PLUS filter through DW&PS. To support growing demand and to accelerate innovation, CFT opened a manufacturing facility in Menlo Park in April. The five-fold increase in floor space is dedicated to best-practice manufacturing and a progressive application development laboratory. Equally important, a dedicated call system is in place to direct product inquires to a technical expert for prompt response.

According to Beazley, "Our goal is three-fold: to make it easy for customers to purchase the TEQUATIC PLUS filter, to offer a reliable supply of product to customers across industries and geographies, and to bring solutions to market faster than ever before. Our product development strategy, in fact, is focused on offering more options to customers, such as higher flow rates and filter cut-offs, all centered around maximizing performance and reducing cost of ownership."
