SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwired - Mar 13, 2014) - TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), a leader in the advanced television market, today announced that Matt Zinn has been awarded the Silicon Valley Business Journal's 2014 Best Bay Area Corporate Counsel "Judge's Choice" Award. Zinn, TiVo's Senior Vice President, General Counsel, Corporate Secretary & Chief Privacy Officer, is the first recipient of the award, recognizing unprecedented achievements in culmination of work that has had a game-changing impact on the industry. The judging panel, which includes previous Best Bay Area Corporate Counsel award winners from several categories, awarded Zinn the honor for his extraordinary contributions to TiVo's success, particularly in areas of intellectual property enforcement and regulatory policy that has enabled TiVo to produce innovative, award-winning products and provide choice to consumers and multichannel video operators.

"It is hard to overstate the dramatic impact Matt has had on TiVo's business," said TiVo's President and CEO Tom Rogers. "During his tenure as General Counsel at TiVo, he has successfully fought to defend TiVo's business against competitors who have deployed DVRs using TiVo's patented technology without permission and continues to lead our charge in Washington, DC, to ensure a regulatory framework that allows consumers to have retail alternatives to operator-leased devices to receive multichannel video programming devices against special interests that seek to eliminate consumer choice. Matt has been responsible for a series of litigation settlements over the past several years, each worth several hundreds of millions of dollars as a part of an enforcement program that has resulted in a total of more than $1.6 billion dollars in guaranteed payments for TiVo. It is fair to say that TiVo would not be the company it is today without Matt's efforts."

TiVo's litigation successes under Zinn's leadership provide an extremely rare example of a legal department playing such a critical role in the company's success and where the role of general counsel has been so meaningful to the bottom line.

Zinn's early role with the company was also very important, as he guided TiVo through a dynamic legal landscape and helped the company make smart product and business decisions that allowed TiVo to innovate and bring new technology and functionality to consumers without being sued out of existence -- in contrast to competitive products like ReplayTV.

The award ceremony will take place Thursday, March 13th at 5:30 pm at Sofitel San Francisco Bay in Redwood Shores, CA. Opening remarks will be made by publishers of the Silicon Valley Business Journal, James MacGregor & Mary Huss. Prior to the marquee 'Judge's Choice' award, honorees will be recognized for exceptional legal accomplishments in the following categories; Labor & Employment, General Counsel - Large Public Company, Diversity Champion, IP law, Community Champion, General Counsel - Private Company, General Counsel - Small Public Company and Rising Star.
