Electricity Supply & Demand Report for December 2017

1. Electricity Demand (See Table 1)

Electric power sold in December decreased from a year ago to 6,465 GWh, which was 99.5% compared to the same period last year. Even with an increase in heating demand resulting from lower temperature than the previous year, total electric power sold was lowered mainly due to a decrease in contract demand.

The details are as follows:

- Lighting (Residential)

Thanks to an increase in heating demand resulting from lower temperature than the previous year, the power demand in the lighting (residential) sector was 102.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.

- Power

Even with an increase in heating demand resulting from lower temperature than the previous year, power demand in the power sector was 97.8% compared to the same period of the previous year mainly due to a decrease in contract demand.

2. Electricity Supply (See Table 2)

Our generated and purchased power in December totaled 7,658 GWh, which was 102.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.

(Power generated by our own hydroelectric power stations)

Even with low water flow rate of 96.9%, our hydro power generated output totaled 669 GWh, a year-on-year increase of 9 GWh, owing to differences in operational conditions.

(Power generated by our own thermal power stations)

Due to differences in operational conditions and other factors, our thermal power generated output was 5,734 GWh, an increase of 1,128 GWh from the previous year.

(Power generated by our own nuclear power stations)

All units of the Onagawa Nuclear Power Station and unit 1 of the Higashidori Nuclear Power Station have been shut down because of regular inspections; therefore, there was no generated output from our nuclear power stations.

(Power generated by our own facilities using renewables and new energy)

Owing to differences in operational conditions in geothermal power stations and other factors, generated output of renewables and new energy was up to 83 GWh, a year-on-year increase of 4 GWh.

(Power purchased from other companies (net))

Due to differences in operational conditions in other companies' power stations, net power purchased from other companies was 1,846 GWh, a decrease of 496 GWh from the previous year.
