Electricity Demand (See Table 1)
Electric power sold in February increased from a year ago to 7,182 GWh, which was 101.8% compared to the same period of the previous year. Addition to a continuous demand from post-quake projects, an increase in heating demand due to extended periods of lower-than-normal temperatures and a longer period of meter reading contributed to the demand increase.
The details are as follows:
Non-Specified Scale Demand (excluding deregulated customers)
Power demand in the lighting (residential) sector was 104.3% compared to the same period of the previous year, thanks to a continuous demand from post-quake projects. An increased heating demand caused by extended periods of lower-than-normal temperatures and a longer period of meter reading also contributed to the demand increase. The total of non-specified scale demand was 104.4% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Specified-Scale Demand (deregulated customers)
Despite a rebound in demand, electric power sold for commercial use was 98.9% of the same period of the previous year due to a decrease in contract demand and other factors. Overall power demand in the specified-scale sectors totaled 100.0% compared to the same period of the previous year.
In relation to the industrial and other sectors, power demand mostly came from large-scale customers, as described in the reference below:
[Reference]
- Large-Scale Industrial Customers
Even with a decline in production in some customers, large-scale industrial demand was 101.1% compared to the same period of the previous year. This was driven by a robust demand from post-quake projects and a rebound from some customers' facilities operations which were in periodical maintenance the same period of the previous year.
- Electricity Supply (See Table 2)
Our generated and purchased power in February totaled 7,530 GWh, which was 101.6% compared to the same period of the previous year due to a leap year. This was above the year-before level for the first time in seven months since July 2015.
(Power generated by our own hydro power stations)
Our generated output totaled 602 GWh, an increase of 68 GWh from the previous year, thanks to a high water flow rate of 119.0%, up 18.4% year-on-year.
(Power generated by our own thermal power stations)
Due to differences in operational conditions and other factors, the amount of generated output was 5,485 GWh, an increase of 77 GWh from the previous year.
(Power generated by our own nuclear power stations)
All units of the Onagawa Nuclear Power Station and unit 1 of the Higashidori Nuclear Power Station have been shut down because of a regular inspection; therefore, there was no generated output from our nuclear power stations.
(Power generated by our own facilities using renewables and new energy etc.)
Due to differences in operational conditions at our geothermal power stations and other factors, the amount of generated output was 77 GWh, a decrease of 1 GWh from the previous year.
(Power purchased from others)
Due to differences in operational conditions in other companies' thermal power stations and other factors, the amount of our power purchased from others totaled 2,034 GWh, a decrease of 1 GWh from the previous year.
