In 2017, TOMRA's reverse vending systems collected 35 billion used beverage containers for reuse and recycling - reducing industry reliance on raw materials for producing new bottles and cans, and ensuring fewer containers end up in landfills, streets and oceans. The number of recycling sessions at TOMRA installations totaled 1.65 billion, with consumers returning 21 containers on average per session.

TOMRA Collection Solutions has over 75,000 reverse vending systems across more than 60 markets, and by the close of 2017 a milestone 40,000 installations were connected to TOMRA Connect. Launched in February 2017, TOMRA Connect is a portfolio of digital products to complement and extend the value of using and owning reverse vending systems.

One of those digital products, TOMRA's recycling loyalty program, reached 52,000 members earning points and redeeming rewards for their recycling efforts. These members returned 42 million containers throughout the year.

myTOMRA, TOMRA's brand new digital refund payout service, went live in December for the launch of the container deposit scheme in New South Wales, Australia. By year end, myTOMRA already grew to 25,000 users, who generated 61,000 refund payouts, and returned 2.3 million containers of the 18 million total received in the scheme's first month.

'2017 was a milestone year for new markets and new technologies for TOMRA, and 2018 is looking to be another very exciting year,' says Harald Henriksen, head of TOMRA Collection Solutions.

'We see today a perfect storm in recycling, with TOMRA positioned to help solve the challenges at the heart of several important trends: urbanization, the growing challenge of waste, rising volumes of plastic pollution, and mounting concern over litter in our neighborhoods and nature. The need for a circular economy approach is needed now more than ever before, and gives a real sense of urgency to the work we do and the contribution TOMRA can make in the future.'
