Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Company

TOKYO-At a time when maximizing operating efficiency and reducing fuel and operating costs are growing concerns for utilities worldwide, Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) and TEPCO Fuel & Power, Inc. (TEPCO FP) are readying a joint announcement on the development and application of an optimized and economic power generation scheduling system. The announcement will be made at the Thermal and Nuclear Power Generation Convention, to be held in Kagawa, Japan on October 27, 2016, by the Thermal and Nuclear Power Engineering Society.

The Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Company (ESS)-developed scheduled system is built around an algorithm capable of quickly aligning operating schedules for up 100 thermal power units, and was supplied to TEPCO FP as an optimal and economic power generation scheduling system.

The system produces a comprehensive operating schedule that incorporates start-up, shutdown and partial load operation for each of up to 90 thermal power units. It incorporates data on the performance of generation unit and their various characteristics and restrictions, with the target of minimizing overall fuel cost while closely matching generated power output with total electricity demand. The system also realizes a comprehensive operation schedule that reflects information: the disposition of fuel- carrying vessels, inventory at hand, and pipeline capacities; a complex and technically difficult objective with the current system.

As Japan promotes reforms to liberalize its energy market, developing economic power generation scheduling that saves on fuel costs by considering the characteristic of installed equipment and operational restrictions has become a major concern for power generation companies that operate multiple power plants. Toshiba's new system offers a solution that the company will continue to improve and expand as market liberalization progresses. Going forward Toshiba will seek to provide IoT-based solutions for economic facility operation to electricity utilities around the world.
