Total is one of the leading worldwide oil groups. Net sales break down by activity as follows:
- refining and chemistry (45.6%): refining of petroleum products (operated, at the end of 2012, 20 refineries throughout the world) and manufacture of basic chemistry (olefins, aromatics, polyethylene, fertilizer, etc.) and of specialty chemistry (rubber, resins, adhesives, etc.). The group is also operating in trading and sea transport of crude oil and oil products;
- petroleum products distribution (43.3%) : operated 14,725 service stations throughout the world. Total is also operating in electricity generation (from combined cycle gas plants and renewable energies);
- hydrocarbon operating and production (11.1%): 2.3 million barrels produced per day in 2012, and broken down primarily between Europe (18.6%), Africa (31%), Middle East (21.4%), Asia/Pacific (18.1%) and Americas (10.3%). The group is also operating in transportation, storage and sales of natural gas, LNG, LPG and carbon.
Net sales break down geographically as follows: France (23%), Europe (51.9%), Africa (9%), North America (8.8%), and other (7.3%).
