Toyota Industries Develops New Toyota Industrial Engines
Engines Feature World-class Fuel Efficiency and Clean Emissions

Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO; Tetsuro Toyoda, President) has developed new Toyota engines for industrial equipments the Toyota 1KD (diesel engine) and the Toyota 1FS (gas/gasoline engine).

The new engines address stricter exhaust emission regulations for industrial engines on a global basis, while responding to customer demands for improved fuel efficiency. Compared to current models with equivalent output, the new engines offer lower displacement, higher fuel efficiency, reduced exhaust emissions, and compact dimensions.

The new Toyota industrial engines will be installed in lift trucks developed by TICO and marketed to manufacturers of construction machinery, agricultural equipment, power generators, and a wide range of other industrial equipment.

  1. Toyota 1KD Diesel Engine
The Toyota 1KD equipped with a common-rail direct fuel injection system is a turbo diesel engine with displacement of 2,982cc. The engine shares its basic design with long-selling, highly reliable automobile engines, and is optimized to deliver high torque even at low speeds, thereby meeting the performance requirements for industrial equipment.

The TICO-developed turbocharger, optimized to meet air charge characteristic for industrial engines, improves combustion efficiency and delivers high torque even at low engine speeds.
This enables downsizing of displacement (43% lower than current models) as well as low emissions and high fuel efficiency (23% lower rated fuel consumption compared with current models) across all operating speeds.

The new engine does not need a diesel particulate filter (DPF) typically installed in a diesel engine to collect and remove particulate matter (PM) from exhaust gas, enabling a highly compact system.

New Technology: World's smallest* electronically controlled variable nozzle turbocharger
    (*Based on TICO own survey)
The compact-sized turbocharger has been specially designed to deliver high torque even at low speeds, a key requirement for industrial engines. TICO leveraged computational fluid dynamics and precision machining technologies accumulated through the development and manufacture of engines, and thereby achieved the world's smallest variable nozzle turbocharger.
The optimized turbine wheel (which extracts energy from the exhaust gas) and compressor wheel (which compresses fresh air) enabled high boost pressure at all operating conditions. These features also greatly contributed to downsizing of engine.
    New Technology: DPF-less Engine System
The engine achieves dramatic improvement in clean combustion by combining increased fresh air delivered by the newly developed turbocharger and atomized fuel spray provided by the direct-injection common-rail fuel injection system, with a newly designed combustion chamber. These features minimize the generation of PM and eliminate the need for a DPF, while enabling the engine to meet exhaust emissions regulations in countries around the world.
This new environmentally- and customer- friendly engine system, prevents a decline in fuel consumption during re-generation of accumulated ash in DPF and also eliminates the need for periodic maintenance such as replacement of the DPF.
