The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE: TRV) today announced that the 2016 Travelers Championship generated a record $2.8 million for charity. In excess of $1.2 million of the total was the result of the Bruce Edwards Foundation Benefit Dinner, which raised money to support amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research.

The tournament, which donates 100 percent of its net proceeds to nonprofits throughout New England, placed an emphasis on supporting organizations that care for ALS patients and conduct research to find a cure. This year’s primary beneficiary was the ALS Clinic at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain, Connecticut.

“I am thrilled that we had the opportunity to help such outstanding organizations as the Hospital for Special Care and the Bruce Edwards Foundation,” said Jay Fishman, Executive Chairman of the Board for Travelers. “The outpouring of support from the PGA TOUR, the players and the entire community was tremendous. I am deeply moved by what we have collectively accomplished this week, and I hope everyone in the ALS community knows that they are never alone and will not be forgotten.”

Each year, HSC cares for more than 250 Connecticut residents with ALS, a progressive disorder that affects the function of nerves and muscle. It’s the only facility in Connecticut that is part of the ALS Association’s national network of Certified Treatment Centers of Excellence and is certified by the Muscular Dystrophy Association for ALS care.

The Travelers Championship includes a week’s worth of entertainment and world-class golf. It also offers a platform for nonprofit organizations to raise funds and awareness for their causes. This year’s tournament supported more than 100 charities throughout the region, including The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a residential summer camp and year-round center that serves children and families coping with cancer and other serious illnesses.

The Travelers Championship has generated about $13 million for over 500 charities since Travelers became the title sponsor in 2007. The event has raised approximately $36 million since its inception in 1952.
