Travis Perkins plc is pleased to retain its top 3/3 score in the latest WWF review of our approach to timber.

'It is really important to us and our customers that the timber we sell comes from well-managed forests,' said Jez Cutler, head of sustainability. 'We believe that it's possible to supply the UK repair, maintenance and improvement (RMI) market with its timber requirements without causing deforestation or degradation.'

WWF-UK runs a Forest Campaign to raise awareness of the importance of responsible forest trade. The campaign works to improve company performance on securing timber and timber products from responsible sources. The 3 trees scorecard helps to measure the progress of timber and timber product buyers in the UK on sustainable sourcing.

'WWF believes that transparency on these issues is an integral feature of a responsible company, and we have therefore awarded points to companies that make the information publicly available,' said Julia Young, Manager - WWF's Global Forest and Trade Network Programme.

More than a third of Wickes products contain some timber or timber fibre. Much of the timber used in these products is produced by Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified companies. FSC is an international organisation that promotes responsible management of the world's forests. Travis Perkins plc can trace 97% of its timber to sustainable sources and will work to maintain this level and look to increase it as far as possible.

'We have worked really hard in this area and are pleased that our efforts are recognised in WWF's leading Forest programme. We believe that this is an area of maturity for our business and we are keen to share our knowledge across the sector,' said Jez.

After final WWF review, Travis Perkins plc (incl. Wickes) has been assigned a finalscore of 3 (out of 3) according to what is publicly available in terms of:

  • Timber purchasing policy and what it says
  • Any performance statement, and what it says
  • Any claims made about responsible sourcing of timber or similar, and what they say.

A final report of this research, which will include a list of all the companies reviewed and the scores achieved, will be made available via the WWF UK website.
