Travis Perkins, the UK's largest supplier of building materials to the home improvement, construction and trade markets, was named as a finalist for 'Best Use of Technology' at this year's prestigious Motor Transport Awards.

The team, led by Fran Leah - Head of Management Information System (MIS) in the Supply Chain and Transport Functions within Travis Perkins - successfully overhauled Travis Perkins' historic data capture and reporting systems, replacing them with an innovative cloud-based storage system, called BigQuery.

BigQuery, a fully managed data warehouse for analytics run by Google, has enabled Travis Perkins to track and trace its fleet more efficiently, which meant any feedback or issues could be raised and handled quickly. It can also monitor accident data, monitor fuel consumption and record driver behaviour, including the amount of time they are spending on the roads.

The new approach has made it much easier for the company, which manages a fleet of 3,600 vehicles, 6,000 drivers and more than 1,700 commercial vehicle locations, to handle its data in a more intuitive way. Since the change, the Group has seen significant improvements, including:

  • A 5% reduction in the fleet's greenhouse gas emissions

  • Able to identify misuse of fuel and adjust accordingly

  • Rate drivers on a point based system, which has encouraged improved behaviour and reduced risk

  • Increased reporting efficiency, whereby data is analysed 75% faster

Fran Leah, who led the team through the change, said: 'The transition from the old system through to the new has been a huge undertaking and challenge, but we are already seeing the benefits across the fleet. We are delighted to receive this award and recognition for what we've been able to achieve, we look forward to seeing how else our cloud system helps us to continue to improve our business.'

Graham Bellman, Group Fleet Director at Travis Perkins plc, added: 'Since joining the group in 2015, Fran has revolutionised our reporting and thinking in the area of fleet efficiency and safety. She has moved the Group, and in many cases our suppliers too, into a whole new world of 'live reporting'. Through forward thinking, aligned to the forthcoming earned recognition framework, Fran has enabled us to become a lean and green operator.'
