UMC Energy Saving Team established to provide a green and safe lifestyle for the underprivileged

Hsinchu, Taiwan, April 21, 2016 - United Microelectronics Company (UMC) announced today that it will be offering the UMC Eco Echo Award to support the most innovative ecological conservation proposals of the year and to encourage sustainable development of environmental organizations. UMC is also working together with Global Views Monthly to rate applicants of the Eco Echo Award. The two companies jointly hosted the Eco Echo Award Launch Event held this afternoon at UMC headquarters in the Hsinchu Science Park. The event also celebrated the establishment of the UMC Energy Saving Service Team and included an awards ceremony for environmentally friendly partners from UMC's supply chain. These actions testify to the determined support provided by UMC to achieve common prosperity and sustainability with both society and the environment while serving as the perfect way to kick-off Earth Day on April 22nd, 2016.

CEO Po Wen Yen of UMC said, 'Energy saving and carbon reduction practices must be incorporated in our lifestyles to provide our younger generations with a sustainable and beautiful environment. The Eco Echo Award was based upon UMC's concern for the environment, with the hope to use a competitive approach to gather as many outstanding and creative projects for environmental protection as we can to inspire effective and direct investments towards ecological conservation while sustaining positive energies throughout the company. All these actions are part of our long-term commitment towards the protection of Taiwan's natural ecology.'

Vice President Mali Yang of Global Views Monthly also described the magazine's long-term concern with the topics of corporate social responsibility (CSR), ecological conservation, and environmental education. Global Views Monthly decided to work with UMC to grade and review applicants of the Eco Echo Award in order to encourage public awareness on the importance of ecological conservation.

CEO Yen and Vice President Yang jointly turned a hand-operated generator to start the award announcement ceremony, which slowly powered the LED light bulbs of the UMC and Eco Echo Award signs. This act highlighted the fact that everyone has an active role in environmental protection as well as the importance of natural ecologies.

The UMC established its Energy Saving Service Team in 2015. This Team is composed of volunteers who provide a selection of energy saving and carbon reduction services to the underprivileged in many aspects of energy and water conservation, environmental protection, and fire safety. The team successfully set up relevant measures and achieved wonderful results in the Shih Guang Educational and Nursing Institution and the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Hsinchu. CEO Yen personally presented the team members with a flag of encouragement. Through their work, the team was able to perfect their professional skills in energy conservation and fire safety. The volunteers' passion for service and social contribution also brought warmth to the poorest corners of society, allowing even the most underprivileged individuals to enjoy an energy efficient and safe lifestyle.

Driven by its practical philosophy, the biggest features of the UMC Energy Conservation Service Team included their extensive knowledge on energy conservation and safety as well as an NT$ 1 million budget approved by UMC management. The budget allowed the Energy Saving Service Team to provide energy saving and safety inquiries and recommendations while offering support in proper hardware improvements and installation. This one-step service model of the team enables the most reliable support for charity services and organizations.

The Excellent Supplier Award for Environmental Protection in 2016 was presented to Edwards Taiwan, which helped UMC successfully achieve its energy saving goals. UMC selects excellent suppliers every year and provides awards to the best partners in semiconductor technologies and services while giving prizes that encourage its supply chain to support environmental protection efforts, create more partnership opportunities for ecological conservation, and enhance sustainable competitiveness for the entire supply chain.

About the UMC Eco-Echo Ecological Conservation Hope Project
Since initiating its efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in 1999, UMC has achieved spectacular results in environmental protection. In 2013, after spending more than a decade in carbon reduction measures, UMC managed to achieve carbon reduction quotas (more commonly known as carbon credits) in the Greenhouse Gas Pilot Project. Part of these carbon credits were transferred to Dragon Steel in early 2014. This deal was the first carbon credit transaction approved by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) in Taiwan. The NT$ 30 million acquired from this transaction was then used establish a fund dedicated to environmental protection. CEO Yen then initiated the UMC Eco-Echo Ecological Conservation Hope Project to support and promote environmental and ecological conservation efforts throughout Taiwan. For Phase I of the project (2014 to 2016), the Society of Wilderness (SOW) invested efforts in conserving the natural habitats of Sauter's Brown Frog (Rana sauteri) in the Dashanbei region of Hsinchu.
