Problem: Over time brake fluid becomes contaminated with water and halides, diminishing the brake system performance through reduced boiling protection, increased susceptibility to metal corrosion and swelling and deterioration of seals.

Proper brake fluid is critical in activation of the braking system. The presence of water, moisture from air and the environment, can deteriorate braking system performance and durability in two ways:

  • Reduction of boiling point
  • Increased component corrosion and degradation

While there are several possible mechanical reasons for decreased braking performance, one of the more important causes is brake fluid contamination. Conventional, glycol-ether based brake fluids can absorb water readily in service. Low water content is an important feature of quality brake fluid as it helps maintain a high boil point and reduced corrosion for proper brake system function. Moisture and contamination can lead to several problems which are detrimental to braking system performance including:

  • Decreased brake system performance from wet fluid boiling
  • Diminished quality of brake pedal response - 'spongy feel'
  • Increased corrosion of brake lines and other components leading to deposits & leaks

An elevated boiling point is critical to the function of brake fluid. As brake fluid becomes contaminated, the boiling point starts to drop leading to lower temperature boiling. When brake fluid boils in an automotive brake system, performance is reduced. The pedal may begin to feel spongy and the time and distance to stop the vehicle can increase. Safe vehicle operation can be compromised by underperforming brake fluid.

Solution: Valvoline's Premium-Dry Brake Fluid's synthetic formula has a higher boiling point to help provide optimal stopping power.

Valvoline Professional Series Premium-Dry Brake Fluid is designed to offer superior corrosion protection and a high boiling point for vapor lock protection. It's premium-dry, synthetic formulation helps avoid costly repairs due to fluid contamination and corrosion from water and halides. VPS Brake fluid has a higher wet and dry boiling point than the DOT 3 & 4 specification. Regularly changing the brake fluid allows the new fluid to continue to absorb moisture and contamination from the harsh automotive environment without compromising system function. Regularly have your brake system safety checked by trained technicians following manufacturer's guidelines. Brake pads and other hard parts require regular replacement too.

Below is a chart of the Boiling Point Specifications for DOT 3 & DOT 4 brake fluid compared to VPS Premium-Dry Brake Fluid:

Type of Fluid Dry Boiling Point Wet Boiling Point
DOT 3

205˚C (401˚F)

205˚C (401˚F)
DOT 4 205˚C (401˚F) 205˚C (401˚F)
VPS Premium-Dry Brake Fluid 205˚C (401˚F) 205˚C (401˚F)

Preventive maintenance on the brake system is critical to optimal stopping performance. The maintenance required goes beyond ensuring the brake fluid reservoir is filled at the correct level. A thorough brake fluid exchange is necessary to remove the contaminated brake fluid and fill with fresh, new brake fluid to help achieve peak braking performance and prolong the life of components.

A complete brake fluid exchange may result in a noticeable decrease in a 'spongy' pedal as the brakes have more 'feel' when applied - resulting in better handling.
