Columbus, Ind. - Over the last few months, Miller Pipeline crews, employed by Vectren Energy Delivery (Vectren), have been working on a $1.2 million project to replace cased pipelines in the distribution and high- pressure distribution system in and around Columbus. Pipelines are installed within casings to provide additional protection. Casings are generally required near interstates and railroads because they allow for minimal effect on heavy traffic when performing work on the pipelines. This project is one of several gas infrastructure improvements being made during Vectren's multi-year plan to modernize its gas infrastructure throughout Indiana.
"To ensure the continued reliability of our natural gas pipeline systems and service, Vectren is continuing to modernize our system to improve the gas infrastructure in the Vectren North territory," said Mike Roeder, Vectren Energy Delivery of Indiana - North president. "These infrastructure enhancements are vital to meeting federal requirements and ensuring the continued safety of our system."
Crews are replacing nearly one mile of six-inch and eight-inch steel pipeline and casing that were first installed in the 1940s to 1950s. Over time, the casings have come in contact with the pipeline, creating a risk of corrosion. Crews will eliminate the aging cased pipelines and install new pipeline with and without casing, when possible. First, the pipeline will be installed within the right-of-way and upon completion of the project, affected yards and streets will be restored.
Construction is expected to continue through November. Short-term traffic restrictions will occur during this project and affected customers were notified prior to the start of work.
