Vectren receives route approval for transmission pipeline relocation project at Dayton airport

Dayton, Ohio - Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio (Vectren) recently received approval from the Ohio Power Siting Board on a route location whereby the utility can move forward with the relocation a portion of a 3-mile, 12-inch natural gas transmission pipeline that runs beneath the Dayton International Airport. Construction of the $12.7 million project is expected to get underway early next month and last through the end of October.
Vectren is relocating the pipeline due to recently enhanced federal pipeline safety regulations and practices, which require the utility to access and inspect this critical pipeline more frequently. Originally installed by a predecessor company before the airport was built, there is limited access to the pipeline due to its proximity to active runways, taxiways, the control tower and the airport terminal.
"We were pleased to receive approval from the Ohio Power Siting Board to move forward with the project after a multi-month process of gathering input from a number of key stakeholders to determine the ideal route. This relocation project will greatly enhance the ability to maintain the safety and reliability of this pipeline, ensure we can comply with federal inspection guidelines and eliminate the need to disrupt daily operations with airport grounds staff," said President of Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio Colleen Ryan. "Relocating the pipeline not only makes it more accessible, but also moves it away from the airport, which is considered a high consequence area due to the large volume of people who are on the property at any given time."
The pipeline will be relocated west of the airport and construction will have minimal impact on the public, cultural resources and the environment. As the process moves forward, direct communications will occur with those property owners who may be impacted by construction. See below for a map of the pipeline's approved new route.
Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio delivers natural gas to approximately 315,000 customers in all or portions of Auglaize, Butler, Champaign, Clark, Clinton, Darke, Fayette, Greene, Highland, Logan, Madison, Miami, Montgomery, Pickaway, Preble, Shelby and Warren counties.
