The cities of Lodz and Poznan chose Veolia to modernize their biomass cogeneration plants which simultaneously produce electricity and heat. Objective: to reduce the level of nitrogen oxide emissions in order to comply with Europe's Industrial Emissions Directive.

Thanks to Veolia the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from the Lodz and Poznan biomass cogeneration plants will not exceed a threshold of 180 mg / Nm, which is below the limit recommended in the EU Directive[1] (200 mg / Nm). Work be undertaken to achieve it: in Lodz, four plants will be modernized by 2017[2]. And in Poznan, by 2018, three plants will be equipped[3] with a catalytic system that will reduce nitrogen oxide emissions to under 150 mg / Nm.

'This modernization comes after the commissioning of the biomass facilities in our Lodz and Poznan plants. We are pleased that these investments will eventually contribute to the improvement of air quality in both these agglomerations', said Gérard Bourland, Country Director, Veolia Group in Poland.

Veolia in Poland

In Poland, Veolia designs, produces, and implements solutions in the water, waste and energy sectors. The Group operates in 40 Polish cities and employs 5100 employees there. It produces electricity for the domestic market in the energy plants in Poznan, Lodz, Swidnik and Krasnik. The Lodz heating network, the second largest in Poland, serves 500,000 people - or 60% of the population. The Poznan network provides heating for 200,000 people.

Key biomass energy production figures in Lodz and Poznan

In Lodz

  • Electricity production: 300,000 MWh / year
  • Heat production: 528,000 MWh / year
  • Biomass consumption: 365,000 tonnes / year
  • CO emissions avoided: 380,000 tonnes / year

In Poznań

  • Electricity production: 144,000 MWh / year
  • Heat production: 371,000 MWh / year
  • Biomass consumption: 210,000 tonnes / year
  • CO emissions avoided: 230,000 tonnes / year
