From 2012 to 2015, Veolia Research & Innovation participated in Project SIRHYUS - Service d'Information pour la gestion des Ressources Hydriques et leurs Usages - based on the exploitation of satellite images of the Earth. At the end of this project eight innovative services serving water cycle managers are now operational.
As a result of cooperation between some major groups (Veolia and EDF in particular), innovative SMEs (ACRI -ST and G2C engineering subsidiary of ALTEREO ) and research organizations (CNES , IRSTEA and CESBIO ), the services platform resulting from Project SIRHYUS provides high value-added information for more optimal management of water cycles in the territories. Based on satellite observation, the eight operational services available on the platform make it possible, for example to produce data about water resources such as assessing water needs for crops, calculating the water stored in snow cover or the quality of surface water (temperature, chlorophyll a, turbidity or the presence of macrophytes).High-resolution mapping of ground use is also available on the platform: it provides pollution indicators for drainage basins, water basins and along water courses. In a context of increasingly scarce water resources, this new tool will help the territories develop solutions that will increase their resilience.
