Safeguarding the food cycle is a challenge which Australia and New Zealand both share. Veolia has rolled out several solutions to overcome this challenge which were recently rewarded by two Australian "business awards".

93% of the food consumed in Australia is produced locally. The country therefore not only has to sustainably manage food, agricultural and industrial waste but also ensure supply meets demand.

Veolia has been also recognised in the Innovation and Sustainable Development categories for its work in the creation of a food cycle and its waste-to-energy solutions.

One of the most innovative solutions has been launched at the Woodlawn waste storage facility located 250km from Sydney. Due to high demand for seafood and decreased supply, Veolia has decided to diversify into aquaculture.
The on-site bioreactor produces biogas used to generate electricity and supply around 2500 homes.

Moreover, excess heat produced by the generators is used to heat water for the fish to 28° to create optimum aquatic conditions for breeding. Following a 4 year trial period, Veolia began supplying barramundi to the Canberra market in 2014. This facility, established by the Group, will supply around 2,5 tons of barramundi per year. It may be a limited quantity given Australian consumption of seafood but not a calorie goes to waste.

With zero wastage and new resources created from refuse, the Woodlawn site stands out as a successful example of a circular economy.


Create new resources The Earthpower and Bulla Organics facilities also work to overcome the country's economic and environmental challenges. Earthpower is located in Sydney and has two methane producers each with a 5000m3 capacity to transform organic and food waste into green energy.
