Hertfordshire County Council, located to the north of London, has signed a 30-year contract with Veolia for managing its residual waste with an energy recovery solution.
'Residual waste' is waste which cannot be reused or recycled or turned into compost. Veolia will collect 350,000 tonnes of this residual waste each year and will process this waste at a new energy recovery facility in Hertfordshire, which will generate 33.5 megawatts (MW) annually. This efficient energy recovery facility will create more than 300 jobs during construction and 40 permanent jobs. Subject to planning permission, the building work of the energy recovery facility will start in 2017 and will be operational in 2020.
For Estelle Brachlianoff, Senior Executive Vice President for Veolia, UK and Ireland zone: 'Our partnership with Hertfordshire County Council has been strengthened following this new contract that will result in a significant investment in waste treatment infrastructure. This solution will not only maximise landfill diversion, but also represents a source of low carbon energy which will power 69,000 homes per year.'
