Verint® Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: VRNT) today congratulates Mayor Byron Brown and the City of Buffalo for receiving a 2015 Computerworld Data + Editors’ Choice Award from IDG Enterprise for its data-driven and inter-agency collaborative program known as Operation Clean Sweep.

In this year’s awards program, the City of Buffalo, New York was one of the 20 organizations selected for demonstrating innovative big data initiatives that delivered significant business value. Under the direction of Mayor Brown, Operation Clean Sweep brings together city, state and federal partners—in conjunction with local health and human services providers and community groups—to reduce crime and provide social services to the areas in most need. Teams work in targeted neighborhoods weekly to board up abandoned structures, remove graffiti and debris, trim trees, repair signs and pot holes, and go door-to-door offering governmental, employment and healthcare services.

Using the Verint Engagement Management local government solution (comprised of technology that originated from Verint’s acquisition of KANA® Software) for citizen engagement—along with service case management and resolution and data sources from various agencies— the City of Buffalo leverages its 3-1-1 call center application with the Common Council (Buffalo’s legislative branch) to geocode service data alongside housing violations and major crimes data to pinpoint problem areas. The objectivity of the data adds validity to neighborhood selection, breaks down data silos between public and non-profit agencies, and helps uncover specific community needs for partners to address. Since its inception in 2006, Operation Clean Sweep has played a role in helping Buffalo reduce its overall crime rate by over 25 percent.

“One of the greatest benefits of Verint’s software is the ability to give governments a greater understanding of customer needs and the means to better fulfill those needs. Additionally, it supports efficiencies and cost savings to help governments be exceptional stewards of tax payer dollars,” says David Moody, vice president and global practice leader, government and public sector, Verint. “Empowered by this framework, Buffalo has further developed its groundbreaking Operation Clean Sweep program, revolutionizing law enforcement, neighborhood revitalization, and health and human services delivery. Verint is proud to partner with the City of Buffalo as it continues to embrace technology and innovation to find new and more effective means to govern and to serve citizens, and we congratulate Mayor Brown and the organization on its success.”

The Computerworld Data+ Editors’ Choice awards program was launched in 2013 by IDG's Computerworld editorial team to recognize organizations that are mining big data to analyze and predict business trends and monetize this information. Organizations were asked to complete questionnaires detailing their big data projects, which were then reviewed by the Computerworld editors. The honorees are selected for their ability to achieve business benefits through big data, and demonstrate real-world results and best practices.

“It is an honor to receive this award for our inter-agency collaborative program,” adds Oswaldo Mestre Jr., director of citizen services for the City of Buffalo. "Our data driven approach to governing allows us a greater understanding of customer needs and gives us the means to better fulfill them, towards reducing overall crime and making Buffalo a safer and healthier place to live. We have tremendous private/public partnership that continues to allow us to service the needs of city of Buffalo resident at the highest level.”
