Midland Gate, the largest regional shopping centre in Perth's east, has celebrated the launch of their $100 million expansion with the 'turning of the first sod' to officially kick off the project.

Vicinity Centres Executive General Manager of Development, Carolyn Viney broke first ground together with the Hon Michelle Roberts MLA, State Member for Midland and City of Swan Mayor, Mick Wainwright.

'For nearly 40 years, Midland Gate has been a central part of the local community and today we marked the start of construction which is an exciting milestone for our team, our retailers and our customers.'

On completion in 2019, Midland Gate will be home to more than 200 retailers including Aldi, Coles, Woolworths, Harris Scarfe, Kmart, Big W, JB Hi-Fi and Target all under one roof.

Aldi, JB Hi-Fi and Harris Scarfe will open their doors next year, Coles will relocate to a new larger store within the centre and Kmart will undergo a major refurbishment to offer customers a new-look store.

A new fresh food precinct, an expanded dining offer and 35 new specialty retailers also feature in the 14,000 square metres expansion.

'This redevelopment will deliver greater choice and convenience for our loyal and new customers and will cement Midland Gate as the largest, everyday shopping destination for the growing community in Perth's expanding east,' Ms Viney said.

As a vital asset to Midland and the greater Swan community, the redevelopment is poised to take advantage of the region's growing population which is projected to increase by 24% to reach 300,000 by 2025.

'We're pleased that we're generating an estimated 965 jobs for the local community including 315 jobs during construction and more than 650 ongoing roles will be created at the completed centre,' Ms Viney added.

Midland Gate remains open for business while the expansion works are carried out.
