Violin Memory®, Inc., (NYSE:VMEM), a leading provider of all-flash storage arrays and appliances delivering application solutions for the enterprise, today announced that the company was awarded Best of Show for Most Innovative Flash Memory Customer Implementation in the ninth annual Flash Memory Awards program. The award recognized Violin for its implementation of its Windows Flash Array (WFA) in a Hyper-V virtualized environment utilizing a Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 implementation for The Australia Department of Defense Central Operations Center in Canberra, Australia. The award winners are determined by a distinguished panel of judges at the Flash Memory Summit.

“As the ninth year of the Flash Memory Summit, the Awards Committee was particularly impressed with the increasing level of innovation when evaluating a unique all-flash storage solution that can successfully address the market movement to multi-hypervisor virtualized infrastructure inclusive of Microsoft Hyper-V implementations, while achieving unprecedented levels of high performance and capacity efficiencies,” said Jay Kramer, Chairman of the Awards Program and President of Network Storage Advisors Inc. “We are proud to select Violin’s Windows Flash Array for the Best of Show Innovation Award based on achieving impressive performance and reduced CapEx and OpEx costs while enabling virtualized environments to be truly scalable and resilient for Microsoft customer implementations.”

Jointly developed with Microsoft® Corp., the WFA is the first all-flash high-performance storage array powered by Windows® Storage Server 2012 R2 to deliver a rich set of storage features and data services for the enterprise. The unmatched speed and efficiency of the Windows Flash Array transforms the data center by dramatically reducing server overhead and application response times through improved storage performance, fundamentally altering the cost structure of enterprise applications. The Windows Flash Array enables enterprise and cloud workloads, such as SQL® Server, Microsoft SharePoint® and Windows® Server with Hyper-V virtualized applications, to meet the needs of global enterprises, while satisfying IT operational demands for maximized agility, automation, and orchestration between network, storage and compute resources.

The WFA is a tightly integrated combination of Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 and Violin’s award winning hardware and software into a single solution that delivers high performance all-flash array storage for enterprise and cloud customers. Customers benefit from the proven storage features of Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 embedded into the Windows All Flash Array, including thin provisioning, data deduplication, scalability and encryption along with space efficient snapshots and continuous availability, through Windows failover clustering.

The Australia Department of Defense Central Operations Center has a mission critical application involving the gathering of data from more than 100,000 users and 450 sites. This application needed to read and consolidate the data collected and process it real-time in a demanding time window of five minutes. This involved ingesting operational data for processing where high performance and high IOPS is key.

“The Windows Flash Array (WFA) exceeded our expectations within the data warehouse and business reporting environments,” said Justin Gasparre, Director, Situational Awareness with the CIO Group, Service Integration Branch at the Department of Defense, Canberra, Australia. “The combination of the Windows 2012 technologies and Flash Array as a platform enables virtualized environments to be truly scalable and resilient with a performance level equal to or greater than direct attached flash storage. This translates to a data warehouse and reporting environment returning immediate value, outperforming traditional vendor offerings and with the lowest TCO compared to traditional storage arrays.”

The Flash Memory Summit Awards were presented at the Flash Memory Summit on August 6, 2014 in Santa Clara, California.

The Violin family of award-winning all flash solutions, including the Windows Flash Array, will be featured globally at:
