On 18 June 2013 Virbac signed an agreement to participate in the Nice Grid experiment, a 'smart' electricity network project, the aim of which is to balance energy production with consumption. More details of this environmentally beneficial initiative, with Jérôme Patte, HSE Maintenance & New Asset Director

What is Nice Grid?

Nice Grid is a project coordinated by EDF, the aim of which is to investigate a smarter design of electricity supply network (Smart Grid). This project forms part of a European experimental programme whose aim is to demonstrate that improved modes of energy production and consumption are possible, notably through the optimised use of a distribution network.

Why undertake this experimental project at Carros?

Our département meets two main criteria which make it suitable for the Nice Grid project experiments. On the one hand since the département is located at the end of a major distribution network, Alpes Maritimes has a fragile electricity supply structure. On the other hand, the region has large reservoirs of renewable resources, in particular due to high levels of electricity production using photovoltaic panels.

Why take part in the Nice Grid project?

This experiment is part of a continuous process of reducing energy consumption which Virbac has been undertaking for a number of years. In particular, in 2012 the organisation established an energy saving plan in partnership with EDF. Through Nice Grid the Group will make a contribution towards the management of electricity consumption peaks, in collaboration with six other partner businesses in the Le Carros - Le Broc industrial zone. This project, which also involves some of the residents of the commune of Carros, will allow everyone to check their consumption of electricity, using systems provided and installed by EDF.

What is Virbac's contribution?

The Group has made a commitment to eliminating part of its electricity consumption at peak periods. To avoid this having an impact on production and on its employees' activities, out of the various experiments proposed by Nice Grid Virbac chose to participate in the "managed heating" solution. In concrete terms, with a 24-hour warning provided by EDF, between 6 pm and 8 pm Virbac will shut off heating in administrative areas and the production of hot water on the insecticide manufacturing site. During the envisaged period for the experiment of between 15 December and 15 February for the next two years, a maximum of 10 shut-down periods may be envisaged by EDF. The first test before the start of the experimental period will take place in the first fortnight of January
