The winning projects cover topics ranging from drone defense to the physical analysis of a water fountain and the recovery of pure metals from computer scrap. At yesterday's reception for the Bavarian winners in Munich's Prinz-Carl-Palais, Marcel Huber said how impressed he was with their work: 'This year's projects again show that thinking out of the box really pays off. The young researchers' strength lies in their pursuing an idea with a completely open mind, coupled with courage, creativity and perseverance, however crazy the idea might seem. Great inventions often begin with extraordinary ideas. I am especially pleased that these young scientists are seizing the opportunities of modern technology and, at the same time, showing a clear awareness of resource conservation and environmental protection.'

WACKER Executive Board member Auguste Willems wished the Bavarian winners every success in the German finals and emphasized the importance of their research work: 'Whether you come home as national champions is not the decisive point in my eyes. Our society needs people with a pioneering spirit in order to progress. You have so much potential and are on the right track.'

The national competition will take place in Paderborn from May 26 to 29, 2016. At the final round of Germany's best-known competition for budding scientists, the winners of the Bavarian round will be pitted against 178 winners from the other German states in seven areas of specialization: the working world, biology, chemistry, geosciences and astronomy, mathematics/computer science, physics, and technology.

About the 'Young Scientists' Competition

'Young Scientists' is Europe's largest competition for aspiring scientists and technologists, and fosters special talents and achievements in these areas. Launched in 1965 by Henri Nannen, the then editor-in-chief of Stern magazine, the competition celebrates its 51st anniversary in 2016. The overall organizer of this annual contest is the Jugend forscht e.V. foundation. The individual regional and state-wide heats and the national finals are held in partnership with corporate sponsors.
