By SAN ANTONIO, April 23, 2014 - A new Walmart opened Wednesday, April 23, in Northeast San Antonio after a community-filled grand opening event and formal ribbon cutting ceremony. The new store at 5626 Walzem Road is conveniently located at the intersection of Walzem Road and Montgomery Drive, and is open 5 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. This store created approximately 300 jobs for the community, and offers area shoppers fresh food options and a full-service pharmacy, and provide a family friendly shopping environment for customers of all ages.
"Walmart is a key partner in keeping the Alamo City on the rise, and a substantial contributor to our city's rapid economic growth in expanding communities such as those encompassing the city's Northeast side," City Councilperson District 2 Ivy R. Taylor said. "This new store will not only create hundreds of jobs, but also create opportunities for residents to begin a career with a company that promotes heavily from within."
Walmart is committed to creating more than just jobs; however, the company is committed to giving employees vast opportunities to create a rewarding, fruitful career path. In fact, more than 90% of store management in Texas began as hourly associates in stores across the state. An example lies in this new store's manager Mark Garza; Garza began his Walmart career as an hourly associate pushing carts at a store in Aransas Pass. Today, he serves as the Walzem store's new manager, leading 300 associates to make customers' shopping experiences as enjoyable and efficient as possible.
One-Stop Shopping Convenience
The store features quality, value-priced general merchandise, including apparel, electronics, toys, sporting goods, and lawn and garden items. It also offers a full line of groceries, including organic and natural selections in addition to local favorites.
The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.
Community Giving
The grand-opening celebration also includes presentations of $4,000 in grants from Walmart to local community groups. In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart's pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart's and the Walmart Foundation's $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in Texas donated approximately 43.7 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2013, or the equivalent of 36.4 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $86.2 million in fiscal year 2013 in Texas alone. New Store, New Jobs
The new store employs approximately 300 full- and part-time associates. Store manager Mark Garza began his Walmart career in 1996 as a cart pusher.
"I'm ready to greet shoppers at the door, show them our product variety and begin to build relationships with people in the community who will become our regular neighborhood shoppers," said Garza. "This new shopping option will allow customers on San Antonio's Northeast side to purchase everything they need and more in one convenient, affordable stop."
A Big Family Welcome
Walmart is happy to be part of the San Antonio community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday,
April 26. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Garza and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.
