With annual enrollment now under way for 2013 Medicare plans, Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) and Walmart (NYSE: WMT) continue to help beneficiaries afford their prescriptions with the launch of a low-cost hypertension drug program. Starting in 2013, members of the Humana Walmart-Preferred Rx Plan will have access to 10 hypertension drugs for $0.01 each when filled at one of the 4,400 Walmart or Sam's Club pharmacy locations.

"A recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1 found that close to 70 percent of Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older have hypertension," said William Fleming, Pharm. D., president of Humana Pharmacy Solutions. "This statistic underscores the importance of offering affordable, high quality prescription drugs to baby boomers and other beneficiaries as part of the Humana Walmart-Preferred Rx Plan."

The $0.01 price for these hypertension drugs means that Humana Walmart-Preferred Rx Plan members will pay $0.01 for them through all phases of their benefit, regardless of whether they have met their deductible or are in the coverage gap. This unique offering from Walmart and Humana builds upon the companies' commitment to provide low cost, high-quality and accessible health care options for Medicare beneficiaries.

"We are committed to making pharmaceuticals more affordable so our customers can ultimately live healthier lives," said John Agwunobi, M.D., president of Walmart's Health and Wellness Division. "The Humana Walmart-Preferred Rx Plan will help eliminate out of pockets costs for high blood pressure treatments so more patients can follow the regimen prescribed by their physicians."

The Humana Walmart-Preferred Rx Plan has grown by more than 50 percent over the past year and has nearly 1.5 million Medicare beneficiaries currently enrolled. The new offering makes the following prescriptions more affordable for Humana Walmart-Preferred Rx Plan members living with high blood pressure:

  • Lisinopril
  • Hydrochlorothiazide
  • Metoprolol Tartrate
  • Atenolol
  • Lisinopril-Hydrochlorothiazide
