June 24--A New York City man wanted by police for cutting his pregnant wife's arm off was captured in the Falls on Saturday night.
The suspect, Yong Lu, was taken into custody by Niagara Falls police at around 7:45 p.m. Saturday at the One Niagara building on Rainbow Boulevard.
Falls Police Superintendent Bryan DalPorto said Falls police were notified by the New York City Police Department and the U.S. Marshals that Lu was in the city, dining in the food court inside One Niagara.
NYPD officers had reportedly located Yu and requested Falls police come and take him into custody.
The Action Niagara Falls reported on its Facebook page that Lu had in his possession a life jacket he had purchased at Walmart.
Crime Stoppers Buffalo issued a release on Friday, suggesting that Lu may be in the Falls area and had attempted to solicit a bus driver into letting him hide in a luggage compartment on a bus going into Canada. The bus driver refused.
Lu was wanted for first-degree assault.
The attack happened Thursday in Brooklyn when Lu, 35, used a steak knife to chop off the arm and sever two fingers on his wife's other limb, according to the New York Daily News.
CBS New York reported that Lu's wife was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
