Wärtsilä, a global leader in complete lifecycle solutions and services for the marine and energy markets, has partnered with Chinese shipyard, Yangzijiang in support of providing water lubricated stern tube technologies into their merchant vessel newbuilding market. Wärtsilä will supply water lubricated stern tube systems for four new build 2700TEU containerships for European based shipowners. The contract was signed in September and the first vessel equipment delivery is scheduled in mid-2016.

Wärtsilä's environmental solutions represent the most efficient lifecycle systems and reduction of operational risks. In addition to providing water lubricated stern tube systems that are ready for installation, Wärtsilä is also assisting Yangzijiang with propeller shaft corrosion protection and providing on-site installation support.

The importance of more ecological systems

Due to legislation driven changes in the global shipping areas, more and more ship owners are considering environmentally friendly products on their vessels. That includes using seawater lubricated stern tube systems instead of other lubricants as it's a 100% pollution free solution. It also offers additional benefits in lower risks and lifecycle cost efficiency. Whilst supporting the continued focus on eliminating pollutants into the sea, the Wärtsilä solution also enables vessels to be fully compliant with the US Environmental Protection Agency Vessel General Permit 2013 requirements.

Wärtsilä's market leadership and extensive experience in water lubricated stern tube systems is an important factor for both the ship owners and shipyards alike. In addition, Wärtsilä can offer real-time monitoring system that can provide valuable information to assist in tail shaft surveys.

'Wärtsilä has over 60 years of experience in supplying water lubricated propeller shaft and stern tube systems for all vessel types. We are delighted to work together and support Yangzijiang when they take these environmentally friendly water lubricated systems into use for their merchant vessels,' says Henrik Eklund, Sales Director, Wärtsilä Seals and Bearings.
