Weir Oil & Gas, a leading upstream provider of pressure pumping and pressure control equipment and services, today announced the result of an ongoing collaboration with customers that improves safety, reduces installation time and lowers costs in wellhead installation: the Seaboard™ Unitized Lock-Ring Wellhead (ULR).

Weir's ULR is one of many field-proven, streamlined wellhead systems with customized improvements based on customer input. These enhancements include a Seaboard™ two-stage, single-bore wellhead system, mandrel casing hangers, quick connect hub, and thru-BOP installed lockdown seal assemblies that eliminate lock-down screws and potential leak paths.

The quick connect hub alone lets operators align, land, and secure the BOP on the wellhead faster than a conventional flange connection, reducing rig up time from two hours to less than 30 minutes.

In addition, the Seaboard™ ULR features a nested system within a single-piece housing, which results in a shorter stack-up height and reduced weight. A threaded flange located on top of the wellhead provides operators with a faster, more secure switchover to an API-threaded hub. Combined, these improvements limit exposure to a dangerous environment, eliminating the need for multiple assemblies and wellhead preparations. This design also eliminates the need for operators to wait for cement to cure before resuming operations.

'In current market conditions, it's imperative to bring value to customers through innovative solutions that will lower their total costs,' said Russell Hamilton, Director of Engineering and Product Management, Pressure Control, at Weir Oil & Gas. 'We offer a wide range of engineering and manufacturing expertise that helps drive those efforts, but one of our greatest strengths is listening to customers and innovating on their behalf. Customers were asking for a single-piece solution with shorter stack-up height and reduced weight, among other things. The Seaboard™ ULR is the latest deliverable in Weir's commitment to exceptional customer responsiveness.'

Other Seaboard™ ULR features include:

  • Mandrel casing hangers that provide the means to run, land, circulate, and cement the casing through the rotary table and BOP with no cutting, welding, or grinding required;
  • Internal lock-down seal assembly reduces multiple potential leak paths
  • Promotes 'safety in the cellar' reducing pinch points and likely bolt thread damage;
  • Equipment manufactured to rigorous API 6A, ISO 9001: 2008 Quality Management System and Design Standards;
  • Comprehensive, customized solutions offered for a range of applications in all major basins.
