IHS TOWERS SPONSORS UNDP PARTNERED DOCUMENTARY FOCUSING ON THE ROLE OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS IN PROMOTING ECONOMIC AND ENTREPRENEURIAL GROWTH IN AFRICA

11 November 2015; Lagos, Nigeria: IHS Towers ('IHS'), in partnership with Regency Foundation Networx and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has produced a documentary as part of the 'It's Africa's Time' series, which highlights the importance of mobile telecommunications and its role as a leapfrog technology. Mobile telecommunications has become a vital contributor to the growth of both urban and rural business entrepreneurship in Africa.

The documentary, which airs on Bloomberg TV today, showcases IHS's operations in Nigeria and gives the viewer an insight into the universe of entrepreneurs from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It investigates SME productivity rates and both the forces enabling them and the obstacles holding them back. Three Nigerian SME owners are interviewed and the programme explores the tangible connection between infrastructure, everyday life and the amazing opportunities that are enabled by mobile technology.

IHS believes that the future economic and social development of Africa will be accelerated exponentially by mobile connectivity. Through its direct and indirect employment of close to 40,000 people, over 95% of whom are African, IHS is committed to making this happen.

Commenting on IHS Towers' partnership with the 'It's Africa's Time' initiative, Issam Darwish, Executive Vice Chairman & Group CEO of IHS, said: 'SME's are one of the core drivers of economic growth not only in Nigeria but all across the African continent. It is our goal to see every single person in Africa with access to mobile technology and data. We firmly believe that enhanced connectivity and access to information will lead to greater prosperity across the African continent.'

IHS Towers is the largest mobile telecommunications infrastructure provider in Africa, Europe and the Middle East currently owning and operating over 23,100 towers in Nigeria, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Zambia and Rwanda. The company's infrastructure and tower sharing model coupled with its renewable energy capabilities to power the towers is crucial to telecoms accessibility for millions of Africans.
