Westpac Group today announced the inclusion of a new conduct background check protocol in its hiring processes.

The conduct background check protocol is an initiative designed by the banking industry to identify instances of misconduct when hiring employees, promoting a better banking culture as part of the Australian Bankers' Association (ABA) Six Point Plan.

Westpac Group Executive, Human Resources, Corporate Affairs & Sustainability, Christine Parker, said the protocol is an important additional measure to ensure that Westpac is delivering on our service promise to our customers.

'The conduct background check protocol is designed to work with our existing hiring practices to allow us to find out more about potential employees' work histories such as whether the individual was dismissed in a previous role due to instances of serious misconduct.

'This protocol is a further step that Westpac and the banking industry are taking to stamp out misconduct and promote good behaviour in banking, and will help us to deliver better service to our customers.'

The protocol will apply to all permanent Australian-based roles at Westpac, and will be implemented from 1 July 2017.

Westpac will continue to work with the ABA and industry to implement the Six Point Plan to protect customer interests, increase transparency and accountability, and build public confidence in the banking sector.
