The systems are fully compliant with the latest SOLAS regulations and designed to protect the bunkering station on board the increasing number of vessels using LNG as a fuel.

According to MSC 94/21, a ship using LNG as a fuel requires a fixed dry chemical powder system to protect the bunkering station, which shall be remotely-operated. In addition, the ship will need a portable dry chemical powder extinguisher to be available near the bunkering station.

Based on these requirements, Wilhelmsen Technical Solutions has developed and tested a 160kg dry chemical powder unit connected to a fixed nozzle. Testing was witnessed by classification society DNV-GL and the system has been approved as being fully in compliance with the rules.

The Unitor Dry chemical powder units have been designed and developed for different locations onboard and can be delivered as an open unit or installed in a weather enclosure. Further, a Unitor Dry chemical powder extinguisher can be mounted to the existing bracket on the unit.

In addition to protecting the bunkering station, there is a need to purge the LNG pipes to avoid explosive mixture of air and gas in the pipes. The Unitor compact nitrogen generator is designed for this purpose. For small ships, a Unitor cylinder bank can be used.
