Following an intensive day of competition held at the world famous Silverstone racetrack, Wincanton, the largest British logistics company, has announced the winners in the Large Goods Vehicles (LGV), Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE) and Newcomer categories, at its annual Driver of the Year event.

The exciting Driver of the Year event has been run by Wincanton for the past 14 years, and showcases the very best driving talent within the company. With thousands of drivers across the business, they are at the core of Wincanton's operations, and this year's event came at a time when there is an increased need within the logistics industry's to find the next generation of talented drivers.

This year, the winners (by category) are:

• LGV Driver of the Year - Albert Codona
• MHE Driver of the Year - Ashley Owen
• Newcomer prize - Philip Houghton
• Team of the Year: David Priest, Mark Rush, Albert Codona and Slawomir Bielesz

Albert Codona said:

'I'm thrilled to have won the LGV category at Wincanton's Driver of the Year 2017. 'I have always worked hard to develop my driving skills over the years, and also provide colleagues with the benefit of my knowledge wherever I can. I'm proud to have demonstrated my skills and experience throughout the challenging events, and I look forward to continuing to do the best possible job I can at Wincanton.'

Adrian Colman, CEO of Wincanton, said:

For the first time at the event, Wincanton introduced a Special Recognition Award, which was awarded to Jeff Whitworth, Paul Rowley and Stefan Buckley. Adrian said, 'These three Wincanton drivers have all been involved in extreme situations recently, and they have gone above and beyond what is expected of them. They are a real credit to themselves and our company.'
