The Health division of Wolters Kluwer, a leading global provider of information and point of care solutions for the healthcare industry, announced today that clinical informatics experts from its Health Language® medical terminology team will present at the 2016 California Health Information Association (CHIA) Convention and Exhibit on the heightened role of data governance and data normalization in today’s health systems. The session, “Terminology Management: Beyond the Revenue Cycle and the Impact on HIM,” will take place June 8 at 8:15 a.m. in the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, Calif.

The session will be co-presented by Cheryl Mason, MSHI, senior manager of strategic consulting and clinical informatics and Deborah Szymanski RN, BSN, client strategy manager at Wolters Kluwer and will speak to the critical relationship between clean data, interoperability and successful analytics strategies. Presenters will specifically discuss the common standard code sets used in the clinical setting and the importance of claims, clinical and patient data to understanding the true acuity of patient populations. They will also present a blueprint for implementing an effective terminology management model to manage information throughout its life-cycle.

Additionally, participants will learn:

  • terminology standards beyond revenue management codes.
  • how clinical, claims and patient data impede interoperability and other initiatives.
  • how a centralized approach can streamline the intake, management and distribution of terminology in an organization.
  • the impact of terminology management on health information management professionals and their role in managing data.

“Strategic data governance has become a necessity for hospitals, health systems and payer organizations, and requires systems and processes for normalizing data for accurate analytics and effective population health management,” said Dan Buell, General Manager and Executive Leader, Health Language at Wolters Kluwer. “We are pleased to have this opportunity to showcase the expertise of our Health Language team and provide healthcare professionals with the solutions and insights needed to lay the best foundation for managing terminology across an enterprise.”

The CHIA Convention and Exhibit is California’s premier health information management event. The four-day event features a comprehensive educational track addressing important HIM topics including: information governance, health informatics, ICD-10, clinical documentation improvement, privacy, security, breach notification, revenue cycle management, project management, EHRs/patient portals and more.
