Woodside celebrates 10th anniversary of Dampier Archipelago Conservation Agreement

July 2017 marks ten years since Woodside and the Australian Commonwealth Government signed their Conservation Agreement covering the Dampier Archipelago in Western Australia.

Woodside Senior Vice President Corporate and Legal Mike Abbott said the Conservation Agreement was a milestone in collaboration with the Dampier Archipelago's Ngarda-Ngarli people, who have inhabited the region around the company's Burrup Peninsula gas processing operations for tens of thousands of years.

"Strong relationships with our stakeholders are the basis of our social licence to operate and the Conservation Agreement has been key to bringing the community, industry and government agencies together in the common goal of protecting the heritage and living culture of this extraordinary place.

"Woodside is proud of the results we have achieved together and looks forward to continuing to work with our partners to deliver meaningful outcomes for the Indigenous community in the years to come," he said.

Under the Conservation Agreement, Woodside has committed $30 million to heritage, culture and arts projects in the region, including the Indigenous Ranger program at the Murujuga National Park. In addition Woodside has pledged a $4 million contribution for the construction of the Murujuga Living Knowledge Centre.

The Conservation Agreement was signed in 2007, after the Dampier Archipelago, including the Burrup Peninsula, was placed on the National Heritage List due to its cultural and archaeological significance. The agreement was signed by then Australian Minister for the Environment and Water Resources the Hon. Malcolm Turnbull under the Commonwealth's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
