Monday, 6th February 2017: Woolworths now accepts UnionPay debit and credit cards across selected supermarkets, benefitting thousands of Chinese visitors, students and residents in Australia by allowing them to conveniently pay for goods in stores using those cards.

With more than 6 billion cards issued around the world, UnionPay is one of the world's largest international card schemes and has the world's largest holder base. UnionPay Cards can be used in 160 countries and regions, covering 36 million merchants and over 2 million ATMs worldwide.

Woolworths is not only offering EMV chip payment for UnionPay cardholders to transact but also offering QuickPass payment, the UnionPay contactless and mobile payment services. There are also plans to roll out card acceptance for UnionPay cards to other Woolworths Group brands, such as Dan Murphy's and Big W in the near future.

Paul Monnington, Woolworths Head of Digital and Payments said; 'Last year the number of Chinese visitors to Australia surpassed 1 million for the first time. This partnership with UnionPay International will make it easier and more convenient for UnionPay cardholders to visit one of our stores.'

James Yang, General Manager of UnionPay International South Pacific said; 'This is a great win for our customers visiting, studying or living in Australia. As tourism from China grows, we know we will see more and more people using their UnionPay cards across Australian retail stores, especially in Woolworths supermarkets, which are conveniently located in all parts of the country.'

In accepting UnionPay debit and credit cards, Woolworths will be the largest retailer in Australia to allow customers to use UnionPay cards when shopping.
