Atkins sign Interface Agreement with EDF Energy to further strategic partnership - 20 January 2015

Atkins has signed an Interface Agreement with EDF Energy, building upon the existing relationship between the two companies which underpins the lifetime strategy of EDF Energy's nuclear assets in the UK.

Signing the agreement alongside Vincent de Rivaz, CEO of EDF Energy, and the other EDF Energy strategic supply chain partners, Atkins has agreed the principles that will ensure that the partnership is best set up to meet the aspirations of zero harm, maximised output and lifetime extension.

Chris Ball, managing director of Atkins' nuclear business, said: "The signing of this Interface Agreement is a key milestone in furthering our relationship with EDF Energy which, since it began in February 2013, has seen us combine our respective knowledge, skills, experience and resources to support EDF Energy's lifetime strategy. Atkins will continue to approach our work for EDF Energy in an integrated way, bringing together technical expertise, project delivery and safety case assurance."

The principles set out in the Interface Agreement establish the environment and expectations of all the strategic partners: EDF Energy, Atkins, Amec Foster Wheeler, Cavendish Nuclear and Doosan Babcock. Coupling these behaviours for success with re-established joint management, governance and oversight arrangements will underpin the delivery of synergistic value, minimise risk, and optimise performance to safely deliver the full lifetime output potential of the nuclear stations.

Since the formation of the strategic partnership, the partners have worked together on critical projects and programmes and have delivered real value by providing crucial supply chain support. EDF Energy's life extension strategy has been robustly laid out and our future challenge lies in converting strategy into reliable and efficient delivery.

Atkins has been a tier one strategic partner to EDF Energy for the maintenance of their existing fleet of advanced gas-cooled reactors and pressurised water reactors, providing more than 600 man years of support in the last three years alone. Working across the graphite core, fuel route improvement, periodic safety review, Japanese emergency response, and DNB plant lifetime extension programmes, Atkins has provided both engineering and programme management services.
