Atkins calls for collaboration in intelligent mobility to relieve congested cities - 24 October 2016

Atkins, one of the world's leading design, engineering, and project management consultancies, today calls on government and industry to take a collaborative and holistic approach to transport design and delivery that will address the urban curses of traffic congestion, air pollution and overcrowded transport networks.

By 2030, 60 per cent of the global population will live in cities and some predictions estimate vehicle ownership will double by 2030 to 2.4 billion. Intelligent mobility is the harnessing of emerging technologies to improve the movement of people and goods. The global launch of Atkins' new approach, branded 'iM', will provide a platform to highlight the many substantial economic and social benefits and develop innovative transportation and infrastructure solutions with clients and government.

During 24-28 October, Atkins will host a number of iM activities including:

• a summit to explore the opportunities intelligent mobility presents in reshaping how we build and deliver mobility solutions. Speakers include the Rt Hon John Hayes MP and BBC journalist, Stephanie McGovern.
• a two-day conference and exhibition for Atkins' global technical network and clients to address challenges
• the launch of Atkins' third white paper on Journey Management: 'I'm looking forward to a seamless journey - from transport to mobility'; can we connect passengers to the right information at the right time to deliver a seamless journey across multi-modal transport?

Philip Hoare, Atkins' iM lead, said: 'iM places people at the heart of our approach, focussing not only on improving the transit of people and goods, but also on transforming the infrastructure of our cities and rural communities to increase efficiency and safety, maximise resources, boost sustainability, create resilience and promote economic growth.

'Collaboration at all levels is essential and Atkins is well-placed to bring together partners, clients, governments and the private sector to solve complex challenges and deliver change.'

Areas of discussion will include:

• redefining the relationship between drivers, their vehicles, infrastructure and highways management
• bringing a more personal perspective to future transport technology
• driving the development of future transport and energy needs
• data and a connected future transport infrastructure

Atkins is already pioneering intelligent mobility solutions in projects worldwide: assisting Colorado in the USA to achieve its vision for a transformative transport system by means of technology and partnerships, helping Dubai to plan and prepare for electric vehicles and leading on two connected and autonomous vehicle research projects in the UK.
