The advent of digital engineering - a year in review - 14 December 2016

Uwe Krueger, Atkins' chief executive officer, said: 'The world is changing rapidly and so are the demands on our industry. Digital disruptors are transforming the way infrastructure is developed and maintained and this trend must be accelerated if we are to meet the needs of a world that continues to evolve at pace. This year Atkins has put new technology at the heart of the projects we are working on and this has enabled us to help clients create smarter, more resilient, infrastructure.

'But this is only the beginning. Looking forward to 2017, we will continue to embrace the advent of digital engineering to ensure we make our cities better places to live and work for the future.'

A review of our key projects and company highlights over the last year that show how we're helping to transform our ever-changing world and enriching lives:

World Economic Forum on ASEAN
Atkins' CEO Prof Dr Uwe Krueger spoke at the World Economic Forum on ASEAN about how regional infrastructure companies can work together to build a sustainable investment climate for the future.

Cranfield University honours Atkins' chairman with doctorate
Our chairman Allan Cook received an honorary doctorate from Cranfield University in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the defence and security industry. In his keynote address, Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Simon Jones praised Allan Cook as 'an engineer's engineer'.

Intelligent Mobility
We called on the government to take a collaborative approach to transport design and delivery that will address the urban issues of traffic congestion, air pollution and overcrowded transport networks.

Atkins Fellows
We're helping people to understand the impacts around autonomous vehicles and their effect on cities. We brought together clients, partners and government to look at the future challenges for our cities worldwide.

Middle East & Africa

Women's Business Network
Launched by Atkins in 2014 to drive gender diversity across the industry in the MENA region, the Middle East & Africa Women's Business Network held its sixth conference in October 2016. The next phase is geared towards harnessing the positive energy to encourage other business leaders to support the retention of talented women.

Howard Humphreys
In March we acquired Howard Humphreys, an engineering and project management consultancy based in Kenya and Tanzania. This marks a significant step for us to establish a local base in the Africa market, as well as providing good local knowledge of the region.

Nabta Town Public Library
Our design for a new public library in Nabta Town in Egypt encourages the user to ponder, innovate and explore. It forms part of the smart and sustainable urban real estate Nabta Townmasterplan.

Dubai Opera
The award winning Dubai Opera celebrates the city's heritage and traditions; its design was inspired by the traditional Arabic dhow, a shipping trade vessel that brought prosperity to the region. A key consideration was its impact on the surrounding neighbourhood, and how the project could offer multicultural opportunities for Dubai's residents and visitors.

Energy

ETI Salt Caverns Study
In partnership with the Energy Technology Institute, we're working to identify salt caverns suitable for storing hydrogen and gas - a whole city's energy demand can be catered for by energy stored in one salt cavern.

Dounreay Tri floating wind demonstration project
We've partnered with Hexicon to create the world-first floating wind project. Together we're pushing the boundaries of design to help provide clean energy for all.

U.S. Department of Energy
We're providing nuclear waste management services in Kentucky and Ohio for the US Department of Energy along with joint venture partners Westinghouse and Fluor. It's our first nuclear contract win since the PP&T team joined Atkins.

Extending the life of oil & gas facilities
We're working closely with the Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO) to help extend the life of Abu Dhabi's oil and gas facilities to be safer for longer. Our expertise in the area is being utilised to safely allow the continued use and development of ageing infrastructure.

North America

RoadX
We're supporting the state of Colorado's commitment to using technology to transform its ageing transportation system into one of the safest in the US within the next 10 years.

Las Vegas Valley Master Plan
We're reducing the risks posed by flooding to lives and property in North America. We're transforming flood maps into more accurate, user-friendly and easily accessible formats.

Project Neon
We're tackling congestion and boosting safety, mobility and accessibility as lead designer for the development of a 3.7-mile freeway through the heart of Las Vegas, an area currently hosting 300,000 vehicles every day.

United Kingdom

WellBriefing™
WellBriefing™ is an award-winning innovative engagement process that puts people's wellbeing at the heart of building design, an approach that we believe is the future of sustainable design.

Water Report
We led a report released by Water UK assessing the risks facing the industry. It calls upon industry, government and regulators to work together with customers to respond to the risk of severe drought.

Cyber Report
Our cyber resilient infrastructure report revealed that more than half of senior industry figures have low confidence in the cyber security of critical national infrastructure (CNI) supply chains, while 50 per cent cite people/staff as CNI's greatest cyber resilience weakness.

Asia Pacific

TOD masterplans for Indonesia's first high speed rail corridor
We're designing the transit oriented development masterplan for Indonesia's first high speed rail project. Our work supports Jakarta's national vision for sustainable hubs around key transport links, and incorporates social, cultural, economic, and community benefits for residents and visitors to the region.

Hong Kong International Airport
We're working to expand Hong Kong International Airport with a new a three-runway system. Upon completion, the airport will be able to handle an extra 30 million passengers.

Air Quality
Our work with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) contributed in addressing some of the negative effects of rapid urbanisation. This helped secure a loan from the ADB to the People's Republic of China for the Beijing Air Quality Improvement Programme which aims to cut pollution and improve air quality for local residents.

Atkins Acuity

Atkins Acuity launch
Our new business to help clients in the MENA region secure funding for infrastructure projects combines our extensive engineering and master planning capability with structuring, financing and project preparation expertise.

Sub-Saharan Africa's 'Sustainable Energy for All' initiative
We're delivering end-to-end strategic advisory services for East and Southern African countries to realise Sub-Saharan Africa's 'Sustainable Energy for All' (SE4All) initiative. Our work will help facilitate the implementation of key investment for sustainable energy and energy supplies projects across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Faithful+Gould

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre
We're supporting one of the largest construction projects in recent Greek history. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre will immediately impact the local area by providing jobs and economic stimulus.
