Do you feel like it's difficult to project and plan for the utility costs at your hotel? It's not just you-utilities are one of the least stable expenses on any hotel's profit-and-loss sheet because there are so many factors that impact the cost of things like water and energy.

It seems like the answer to that issue is to use less of those resources, so that the variation in cost from year to year isn't as much of an impact on your budget. But that's easier said than done in an industry dependent on guests' comfort and happiness.

So where can you find utility savings? Believe it or not, your laundry might be the place to look.

How You Can Save

There are five major expenses when it comes to laundry utilities, but water is the leading factor. It's estimated that about 25 gallons of water are used to do laundry for each hotel room every day in the United States. On average, that's around 2.4 billion gallons of water being used per month for hotel laundry purposes.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), managing water usage even slightly can have a sizeable impact on overall operating costs:

Water use affects a hotel's operating costs and environmental footprint. Industry estimates suggest that implementing water-efficient practices in commercial buildings can decrease operating costs by approximately 11 percent and energy and water use by 10 and 15 percent, respectively.

If laundry by itself accounts for about 16% of water usage in hotels, and just managing water usage to reduce the usual waste can cut overall operating costs by more than 10%, imagine what happens when you cut water use in your laundry operation more drastically-say by up to 80%.

Cutting Hotel Laundry Costs

Near waterless laundry machines have made it possible to make serious spending cuts in hotel laundry utility costs-and in turn, operating costs as a whole. Not only are you using less than a quarter of the usual amount of water, you're using less energy as well. Most of the energy used in laundry operations is used to heat the water in the wash, so if there's less water, well, you get the idea.

Now instead of worrying about cutting utilities across your entire property, you've decreased usage in one piece of the operation and cut costs by thousands of dollars. If that isn't a good reason to make laundry utility costs a priority item for next year's budget discussions, we don't know what is.
