The granddaughter of Walt Disney recently bought this ranch from Ryan Wood, a former pro football player whose beef jerky is legendary around these parts.

Wood, who briefly played fullback for the Dallas Cowboys, is the co-founded of the sports clothing and accessories company Under Armour. He worked there for a decade, and then spotted this historic ranch online and decided to become an actual cowboy.

He paid $5 million for the property in 1997.

"After a big day on the ranch, I feel like I just went through a football game," he told American Cowboy magazine. "I enjoy the physical demands of the job."

The 490-acre ranch near Steamboat Springs was known as the May Ranch, and Wood started a cattle-ranching business there called Sweetwood Steak Co.

The May Wood River Ranch sits along the pristine Elk River, abutting more than 1,000 acres of national forestland. Wood improved it to, according to the listing, "incorporate the spirit of the Old West with the comforts of the New West."

The main cabin, the Bridge House, is a 2-story, 2,674-square-foot, 4-bedroom, 4-bath restored historic building with a river-rock fireplace and barnwood ceilings.

In addition, there are 2 guest cabins, a historic barn that has been converted into a theater, a shop and a barn with guest quarters upstairs.

Wood listed the ranch for $12.95 million and sold it for $11.25 million. A story about the sale in the local paper said the buyer was looking for a place near Steamboat Springs that was suited for her horses.

The property was sold by Brian Smith of Hall and Hall. The buyers' agent was Penny Fletcher with Colorado Group Realty.
